This jewelry is based on a gold necklace from Oualata, Mauritania in the collection of the Smithsonian&#39s National Museum of African Art. The textured beads and triangular pendants show techniques of filigree and granulation brought to Northern Africa by Jewish artisans who moved to the region centuries ago from southern Spain. The triangular pendants recall the form of protective amulets.
