Chalcedony is found in all types of colors, and its varieties are named based on color.
The chalcedony family refers to quartz based minerals that are microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline in structure. Like quartz, chalcedony minerals have a hardness of 7.
The stone was given its name by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and naturalist, who discovered the stone along the shore line of the river Achates sometime between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Colorful agates and other chalcedonies were obtained over 3,000 years ago from the Achates River, now called Dirillo, in Sicily.
The lovely color patterns make this semi-translucent gemstone very unique.
