Beschreibung

Often identified with the Asante peoples, brass weights for measuring gold dust were used throughout Ghana and Cote d&#39Ivoire. Each party to a trade would check the gold using their weights. Some weights evoke proverbs, and more then one proverb may apply. The porcupine, because of it&#39s quills, is often associated with power and weapons- &#34Who dares to attack the porcupine, which has so many spikes?&#34 Perhaps this is why one Asante king chose to send a large weight in the form of a porcupine to tell a guilty individual to pay a fine he owed.
