This beautiful and unique Amethyst Goddess Pendant depicts the Goddess holding a faceted amethyst. The back of the stone is left clear so it can catch the light reflections and allowing the healing power of the Amethyst to flow freely.
The mother goddess took a variety of different forms. Sometimes she was a snake, or a vulture, or the Moon. Each symbol represented a cycle of death, birth and regeneration: the snake hibernates, then wakes up and sheds her skin; the vulture recycles dead flesh by eating it; and the Moon dies and is reborn every 28 days, mirroring the feminine menstrual cycle.
The legend of amethyst comes from Greek myth. One day Dionysius, the god of intoxication, was angered by an insult from a mere mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal to cross his path. To this end, he created fierce tigers to carry out his wish. Along came an unsuspecting beautiful young maiden - Amethyst, on her way to pay tribute to goddess Diana. To protect her from the brutal tiger’s claws Diana turned Amethyst into a statue of pure crystalline quartz. At the sight of the beautiful statue Dionysius wept tears of wine in remorse for his cruel action. The god's tears thus stained the quartz purple, creating the gem we know today.
Purple has long been considered a royal color so it is not surprising that amethyst has been so popular throughout history.
