Vegetable Oils

An infused or macerated oil is a carrier oil that has been infused with the goodness of a herb, flower or plant. Using infused oils in any skin care preparation is extremely therapeutic, as they contain the nutritive properties of both the carrier oil and of the herb or flower that it contains.
Peach- or Apricot Kernel Oil, Sunflower, Sweet Almond and Jojoba Oils are the most commonly used carrier oils when making macerated oils, as they are easily obtained and suitable for all skin types. Due to a recent worldwide shortage of jojoba oil, the prices have increased dramatically. As a result, when making your own infused oils, you may prefer to use sunflower or olive oil. Due to its moisturizing, nourishing and revitalizing properties, apricot and peach kernel oil is widely used for massage therapy, Apricot Kernel Oil is very mild natural oil, often used in baby products because of its fine gentle nature. Sunflower oil doesn't have as many nourishing skin care benefits as olive oil, but it spreads well on the skin, and it's lighter colour and scent makes a good macerated oil. Olive oil, although heavier, is especially suitable for dry, chapped, mature and sensitive skin types, and as an anti-inflammatory, is beneficial for eczema, psoriasis and other irritated or itchy skin conditions. Although extra virgin olive oil has the highest therapeutic benefit, it has a stronger scent, so you may wish to use a lighter olive oil or blend it with another oil to neutralize the odor when making an infusion. Sweet almond oil is sometimes used for macerations, as it spreads well, but it is NOT suitable for people suffering from nut allergies, and if using sweet almond oil, we recommend only making small batches, as almond oil goes rancid more quickly. A less commonly used oil, but one which works well is fractionated coconut oil. The scent of coconut oil is gorgeous, it has valuable health & skin care properties of its own, and it has a high tolerance to heat and will last without rancidity for a long time. Once made, macerated oils generally won't keep as long as other carrier oils, so we've included a small recipe, suitable for household use, which is easily scaled up if necessary.
