Marcasite Locket Pendant, sterling

The popularity of wearing a locket as jewelry reached its peak during the Victorian era. Often given as a symbol of affection, the locket would contain a miniature portrait, photograph or lock of hair. Earlier examples from the 16th and 17th centuries were very elaborate, embellished with enamel and precious stones. The locket replaced the hinged reliquary of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance which usually contained a religious relic.
