African Ceremonial Sword Pendant

This pendant is based on a detail of a ceremonial sword from the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria. Not actually a functional weapon, the fan-like swords are still twirled in salute to the king. The collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art includes both swords and 16th-18th century artworks depicting courtiers and kings holding their blades.
